A dental emergency is any acute issue causing significant pain, bleeding that will not stop, a traumatic tooth injury, a broken restoration that is exposing nerve, or facial swelling. Sarasota Dental Arts reserves appointment slots every business day for urgent care. Call first — most situations can be triaged and improved by phone before you even arrive.

Common emergencies

What we treat,
same-day.

Severe tooth pain. Pulpitis, an infected tooth, an irreversibly inflamed nerve. We diagnose and stabilize same-day. If a root canal or extraction is the right answer, we either start the treatment that visit or refer you to the right specialist on a same-day basis.

Broken or fractured teeth. Cracks, chips, traumatic fractures. We see you fast, take imaging, and present the options to save the tooth. Most broken teeth are salvageable when treated quickly.

Knocked-out teeth (avulsions). A permanent tooth that has been knocked out is a true emergency. The success rate of reimplantation drops sharply after 30 minutes. Call us before you do anything else.

Lost crowns, fillings, or veneers. We rebond or temporarily restore on a same-day basis when we can.

Facial swelling or abscess. Treat as urgent. Swelling around the eye or jaw can indicate a spreading infection. Call immediately.

Post-procedure bleeding. Some post-extraction bleeding is normal. Heavy bleeding past four hours despite firm pressure is not. Call.

First-aid until we see you

What to do
in the next 30 minutes.

For pain

Rinse with warm salt water. Ibuprofen 400–600 mg (if you tolerate it) is the most effective dental analgesic, and can be alternated with acetaminophen 500 mg every three hours for stronger pain. Cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Do not apply heat — heat worsens pulpal pain.

For a knocked-out tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline. Do not scrub. Replant it in the socket if you can and bite on a wet cloth. If you cannot replant, store the tooth in milk and come immediately.

For a broken tooth

Save any fragments in a wet paper towel. Rinse the mouth with warm water. If there is sharp edge irritating the cheek or tongue, dental wax or sugar-free gum can cover it temporarily.

For bleeding

Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. A wet tea bag works in a pinch. Avoid spitting, drinking through a straw, or smoking — all three dislodge the clot and restart bleeding.
